 This senior specialist position provides legal administrative expertise by ensuring that global patent application docketing, filing particulars, grants, annuities, and records are current, accurate, and in accordance with international legal treaties and statutory requirements, as proceduralized in Lilly’s global patent procurement policies and procedures (GP4). The position reports to the director of IP legal operations, is a member of the central Patent Support Group (PSG), and requires a Team Lilly commitment to ensuring no loss of patent rights due to administration error.The position requires a commitment to data integrity, attention to detail, troubleshooting, problem-solving, strong reading comprehension and proofreading skills, proven prioritization, organization, and typing/writing/verbal communication skills, ability to self-manage and establish/meet deadlines, and provide oversight for vendor-provided services. Ensure IP Legal’s International Patent Procurement Workload Management
  • Work as a team with PSG colleagues to manage own and other queues of official and unofficial communications relating to patents for Lilly, its subsidiaries, acquired companies, and licensing partners. This involves continuous training and use of the IP Manager docketing system and iManage document management system.
  • Organize patent families and administer the transfer in of patent cases that may originate from outside counsel or other parties; similarly, administer out the transfer of licensed or divested assets.
  • Read, docket, and route to the appropriate Lilly legal personnel all communications from law firms, patent offices, partners, and others, researching and providing requested information directly to the originator where appropriate.
  • Accurately enter and steward critical data relating to the filing, prosecution, publication, grant, and maintenance of patent assets.
  • Correctly docket shadow records and maintain files associated with patent cases that are driven by outside counsel or other parties.
  • Instruct status checks, reminders, or escalation as needed to ensure case progression and no loss of rights due to a missed deadline.
  • Generate data queries and perform data audits as necessary to deliver quality and manage the business.
2. General International Patent Support Services
  • Liaise with vendors, students, and/or contractors in order to deliver certain legal support services such as mail processing and legalization courier service.
  • Author, maintain, and provide training and support consistent with global business processes and procedures comprising GP4.
  • Provide additional back-up or overflow support to Patent Support Group personnel, help lead small-to-large initiatives, and assist with other assignments as necessary.
3. Execute Global & International Patent Application Preparation and Filing
  • As workloads dictate, learn and liaise with patent personnel, inventors, international law firms, country patent offices, vendors, and external parties to critically review and accurately and timely file international patent cases, and progress cases through formalities, search, publication, examination, and national entry, including assistance in filing communications with various receiving offices and examination authorities.

  • At least 3 years’ experience in law administration, most preferably, patent.
  • Completion of Post Offer Exam, Completion of Work Simulation or Completion of Administrative Skills Testing if applicable.
  • Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to be employed in the United States. Lilly does not anticipate providing sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B or TN status) for this employment position.
 
  • Experience with docketing systems.
