Join the ECB Forum on Central Banking in Sintra, Portugal

Every year the European Central Bank (ECB) invites PhD students to participate in the young economists’ competition of the ECB’s flagship Forum on Central Banking, held in Sintra, Portugal. Selected students are given the unique opportunity to present their research findings to policymakers and top academics from around the world and engage with them during the Forum.

Based on the papers they submit, 10-12 students will be chosen by the ECB’s Directorate General Research to travel to Sintra. During the Forum, the selected students will display the main findings of their research in the form of a poster and answer questions from participants. A committee of senior ECB staff and top academics will then select the winning poster, assisted by anonymous online ratings submitted by Forum participants. The winning poster will be announced by the ECB President in a ceremony at the end of the Forum and its author will be awarded a prize of €10,000.

Who can participate?

We invite students of all nationalities – who are currently enrolled in PhD programmes in economics or finance – to participate in the call for papers. We particularly welcome applications from female candidates.

If you are currently working or collaborating with the ECB or a national central bank of the European System of Central Banks, you are not eligible to participate.

What is the theme of this year’s competition?

This year’s conference focuses on 20 years of European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU), and PhD students are invited to submit papers on the future of EMU. We would greatly appreciate receiving papers addressing:

  • economic growth within EMU in the context of globalisation and digitalisation
  • the impact of demographic changes and migration on economic growth within EMU
  • macroeconomic convergence within EMU

Papers on other topics relevant for central banking (including sustainable finance, financial stability, banking regulation and supervision, and how climate change could impact central bank decision-making) will also be considered.

How will the finalists be selected?

We will assess the papers against the following two criteria:

  1. innovative thinking and scientific merit
  2. European policy relevance

If you are a successful candidate you will be notified around the end of April 2019 and will receive further information about the ECB Forum in Sintra thereafter. The ECB will cover the selected finalists’ travel and accommodation expenses incurred as a result of attending the ECB Forum.

How can students apply?

If you are interested, please submit your application online and upload the following documents:

  • curriculum vitae
  • research paper including a short abstract
  • letter of recommendation from your main tutor

Please submit your application by 11 March 2019. Please ensure that you answer all the questions that appear on the registration form. It is also important that you provide all of the documents mentioned above for your entry to be considered valid.
